Phu Quoc, an island off Kien Giang Province in southern Vietnam, hopes to reopen a direct air route to India in order to boost tourism growth, Huynh Quang Hung, chairman of the Phu Quoc City People’s Committee told a reception for Madan Mohan Sethi, Consul General of India in Ho Chi Minh City, on Wednesday.

According to Hung, Indian tourists are interested in visiting Phu Quoc Island to explore and relax, and several Indian couples have picked the island as their wedding venues.

“There was a nonstop air service between India and Phu Quoc Island in the past, but its operation was suspended. [Phu Quoc] hopes to relaunch that link to foster tourism growth of the two sides,” he stated.

“Phu Quoc will create favorable conditions for Indian citizens to arrive on the island to travel, work, and live."

Phu Quoc City welcomed an estimated 32,800 Indian tourists in 2023, according to the local administration.

Since the start of 2024, the city has served nearly 12,000 visitors from India.

Consul General of India in Ho Chi Minh City Sethi hoped that through his meeting with officials from the Phu Quoc City People’s Committee, tourism cooperation between Phu Quoc and India would be enhanced.

“India desires to collaborate with Phu Quoc to host cultural events and an international yoga festival on the island in June in a bid to contribute to spurring tourism and cementing bilateral ties,” Sethi presented his proposal.
