On October 22, 2018, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong of the Communist Party of Viet Nam Central Committee signed the Resolution on the strategy for the sustainable development of Viet Nam's marine economy by 2030, with a vision to 2045 (Resolution No.36-NQ/TW). Regarding maritime economy, the Resolution focuses on effective exploitation of seaports and sea transport services. This resounds to the master plan on the development of Vietnam’s seaports system in Decision No. 202/1999/QD-TTg in 1999, Decision No.2190/QD-TTg in 2009, and Decision No. 1037/QD-TTg in 2014.

Vietnam Port Development Conference 2019 (VPDC 2019), which will be held during 26 – 27 June, 2019 in Ho Chi Minh City, is an opportune event to discuss the achievements, improvements needed to be made, and the way forward for the Vietnam seaport system development.

In the past two decades, Vietnam’s seaports have expanded to almost 4.4 times their original length (87,550m as compared with 20,000m in 2000). Vietnam boasts some new, modern ports in Cai Mep – Thi Vai (CM – TV), Hiep Phuoc, Lach Huyen and Cai Lan. Future ports under development include My Thuy International Seaport, Lien Chieu Seaport, and Lach Huyen International Gateway Port.

According to Vinamarine, Vietnam's seaport system has achieved positive growth in 2018, with the total volume of cleared goods estimated at nearly 597 million tons. The number of containers through ports amounted to approximately 17.7 million TEUs, an increase of 20% compared to 2017. The total capacity of the seaport system reached 95-98% in 2018, indicating efficiency.

Themed at Enhancing the Efficiency, Connectivity and Sustainability of Vietnam Seaport System Development, VPDC 2019 aims to strengthen connections among governments, port authorities, port operators, shipping lines, equipment manufacturers, solution providers, investors, consultants and business associations. Besides seaports, development of inland waterways, dry ports and domestic logistics network will also be discussed. We expect that 20+ industry leaders and 150+ senior executives will join this high profile event. We are confident that VPDC 2019 will offer all the stakeholders advantage to develop the Vietnam seaport business.
